Marketplace Guide

Quick answer

The Marketplace is a rotating market that changes stock three times a day. The morning market (5:00–11:30) and afternoon market (11:30–17:00) each sell a featured item at a steep discount, often 60–80% off, while the night market (17:00–5:00) sells a $50 mystery bag with three random items. It usually opens once your island has around eight residents.

Most shops in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream refresh once a day or once a week. The Marketplace is the exception: it’s the only shop that changes during the day, and what you find depends on when you visit. That makes it one of the best places to pick up bargains, but also one of the easiest to overlook if you always play at the same time.

How to Unlock the Marketplace

The Marketplace is one of the population-based buildings. It typically appears once your island reaches around eight residents, the same milestone that brings the Tomoria Restaurant, and in practice the two often arrive close together. Some players have seen the Marketplace only after Tomoria was already open, so if you have eight residents and it hasn’t appeared yet, keep caring for your Miis and solving their problems; it will follow.

When it’s offered, placing the Marketplace costs $5,000, which makes it one of the more expensive buildings on the island. It’s worth saving up for, because the discounts quickly pay that back. For the full list of facilities and what unlocks each of them, see our guide to all buildings and shops.

The Daily Schedule

The market runs in three shifts based on your console’s clock. Each shift has its own stock, and visiting at the wrong moment simply shows the stall in a different mode.

Morning market · 5:00–11:30

One featured item, usually food or clothing, at a big discount.

Afternoon market · 11:30–17:00

A new featured item, often clothing or something special, also discounted.

Night market · 17:00–5:00

A single mystery bag for $50, containing three random items.

Because the shifts follow real time, players who usually check in at lunchtime will only ever see the afternoon market. If you want the full range of deals, try visiting at different times of day now and then: a quick morning check before work and an evening visit for the mystery bag cover two of the three shifts.

Daytime Deals

During the morning and afternoon, the Marketplace puts a single item on display with a heavy discount, often between 60 and 80 percent off its usual price. It might be a premium dish, a piece of clothing or an outfit in an unusual colour. These are particularly good value when:

  • The item is a food you haven’t tried yet, since new dishes help you discover each Mii’s favourite meal.
  • A resident has recently asked for new clothes.
  • It’s an expensive item you’d buy anyway, where 80% off saves real money.

Stock is limited to one purchase per shift. If the featured item doesn’t interest you, there’s nothing lost; the next shift brings something different.

The Night Market Mystery Bag

After 5 PM, the stall switches to the night market and offers one mystery bag for a flat $50. Each bag contains three random items, which can be clothing, food or other goods, and you won’t know what’s inside until you buy it. Once you’ve bought the bag, the night market closes until the next evening.

Mystery bags are a gamble, but a cheap one. The contents vary from everyday items to the occasional high-value treasure that’s worth far more than the bag itself, and anything your residents might like makes a ready-made gift. Anything you don’t need can usually be turned into cash at the Rite Price Pawn Shop.

Tip

Make the mystery bag part of your evening routine. At $50 it’s one of the cheapest ways to get new items for your residents, and it helps fill gaps in your collection.

Marketplace Tips

  1. Vary your play times. Each shift has different stock, so checking in at different times of day shows you more of what the market offers.
  2. Buy foods you don’t own. Discounted new dishes are the cheapest way to expand your menu and find favourite foods.
  3. Check requests first. If a resident wants clothes, see whether the featured item fits before buying elsewhere.
  4. Grab the evening bag. At $50 for three items, it’s an inexpensive way to add variety to your collection.
  5. Leave the clock alone. Changing your console’s time locks time-based features, including the Marketplace, for about 24 hours.

How the Marketplace Compares to Other Shops

Shop What changes When
Fresh Kingdom Food Mart Four Daily Specials Every day at 6 AM
Where & Wear Daily Specials tab Every day at 6 AM
T&C Reno One Weekly Special Mondays at 6 AM
Marketplace Featured item or mystery bag Three times a day

Two things set the Marketplace apart. First, it’s the only shop that changes during the day, so the time you play really matters. Second, while items bought from the regular shops’ specials join your permanent collection and can be bought again later, the Marketplace’s featured deals and mystery bags are one-offs: if you skip one, there’s no guarantee you’ll see the same offer again. That’s why it pays to glance at the stall whenever you pass by.

Keep in mind that the Marketplace follows your console clock like everything else on the island, so the shift you see depends on your local time.
